What happens if my surgery is closed and I call the Patient Contact Number? -

If you call the Patient Contact number (out-of-hours), your call will be answered by one of our call handlers.  The call handler will ask you certain questions to enable them to process your call.  These will include the name of your doctor, if you have one and the surgery name.  They will also ask your name, address, date of birth and telephone number.

They will then ask you the reason why you are calling.  Once these details have been taken, you will be informed that a clinician (nurse or doctor) will call you back within the hour.

The doctor or nurse will ask you some health and symptom related questions and based on what you tell them will decide the best course of action.  This may be any of the following:

  • Telephone advice
  • A remedy you can buy from the chemist or arrange a prescription you can collect from your local chemist
  • An appointment at one of our bases
  • A home visit
  • Refer you directly to accident and emergency, walk-in centre, or request an ambulance transfer

All calls received at BarnDoc are recorded for medico-legal reasons and to ensure high standards.

Feedback to your doctor -

Following your contact with BarnDoc an electronic message is sent to your own GP the next working day with details of your contact.  This allows your surgery to be aware of what has happened and they can take action to follow up if required.
