Telephone advice with a nurse or a doctor

Once you have spoken to one of our call handlers and your details have been taken, you will be told that you will be called within the hour.  When called back you will be asked a number of health and symptom related questions which will help the clinician (nurse or doctor) to decide on the best possible outcome for your presenting condition.  It may be that you just require some telephone advice to try some home remedies to ease your symptoms.

Base Visits

You may be invited by the clinician on the phone to attend one of our bases, either in Edgware or Finchley Walk In Centre, or at our Primary Care base in Chase Farm Hospital.  It is preferable for the patient that they attend for a base appointment as a doctor or nurse can see three or four patients in the time it takes to do one home visit.  This means that more patients benefit and their waiting time to see a doctor is much shorter for all.

At the present time there are not facilities to transport patients to the doctor for GP ‘on call’ services so, in most cases, patients are expected to make their own transport arrangements to get to an appointment.

BarnDoc sympathises with the difficulties this may cause people, but must emphasise the doctor’s decision to offer a home visit is made on strict medical grounds only.

Our Primary Care Centres are based at –

Home Visiting Service

If the doctor or nurse feels that you are not well enough to attend one of our bases you will be offered a home visit.  Home visits are prioritised on the basis of clinical need, which sometimes means that less urgent calls may be delayed.

Dental

BarnDoc offers a dental telephone advice service on pain relief and the patient may also be offered a base consultation, this is on week days only.  At the weekend and bank holidays Barnet patients can be referred to a face to face dental service, between the hours of 10.00am to midday, although appointments are limited and it is at the discretion of the dentist as to whether the patient needs to be seen that day or can wait until their own dentist opens.  Enfield has a Dental Access Centre operating on a Sunday morning and Bank Holidays only.  Enfield dental patients can similarly be referred to this service but it is at the discretion of the dentist as to whether the patient needs to be seen that day or can wait until their own dentist opens.

Out of Hours District Nursing Telephone Call Handling Service

To assist patients requiring help from their District Nurse Service, BarnDoc provides telephone call handling during the evening and overnight, Monday – Friday, and 24hrs at the weekend.
